I didn’t catch it right away either, but then I realized that both “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey” are epic poems. The joke is that he failed at identifying an epic.

Ok I concede, this is one of the only appropriate moments to use that overused phrase!

Recursive Fail in Macro. Telemachus is in both the Iliad and Odyssey.

Sure, he’s “in” the Iliad, but as a baby, and only for long enough to be placed in front of a plow. He’s featured much more prominently in the Odyssey.

In either alternative it still plays out logically: in this case, as an Epic Fail for the editor (who really ought to know better if s/he is marking).
You could say it is a universally logical literal literary epic fail.

Well, you could cite the definition of “featured” here, because although Telemachus was both important and present in the Iliad, he was not really a “featured character”, and really only had a very minor role.

I hadn’t read basketcase before (aside from a few StumbleUpons), but after following Matt’s link I became an instant fan.
