While I’m not a believer of the evolution religion, this is hilarious :) .

Evolution is not a religion, its science, because its not based on faith but in facts

    That was hilarious BTW

Psh, Evolution is totally a religion. There’s no proof it happened, yet people believe in it.

Leigh McCulloch and Lifon: You are both idiots. Do some fact-checking before you start typing. Check if there is evidence for religion, then check if there is evidence for evolution, then make an informed comment.
In other words, stop being idiots.

Do some fact checking to see if there are actual facts supporting religion as opposed to just theories… Oh yeah there aren’t. While there is actual evidence supporting that at least Jesus Christ was a real person.. Whether or not he did what Christianity says he did. That’s faith.

There is no solid evidence, only theories. Evolution is a theory. Religion is the same. If you do not have solid proof, then you cannot truly proof it. Now, the needless name-calling is quite juvenile, please show some civility.

You what is also a scientific theory? Gravity. Theory in common English and theory in scientific English are two very different things.

    Awesome commic!

    FISH OUT OF WATER!

Anywho. A theory is the second highest understanding of something(Law being the first). The theory of evolution is accepted by any self-respecting scientist because of the evidence supporting it. And it’s the law of gravity, not theory of gravity. So when you say “It’s just a theory,” that’s saying a lot.

    March 25, 2009 at 10:03 pm | # | Reply

Gravity’s actually a good example, since it has a law and also a bunch of related theories.

Law of gravity: What gravity does in precise mathematical terms. All objects (technically it’s “point masses”, but that’s not the point) in the universe attract each other with a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. Yes, that was mostly copy/paste.

Theories of gravity: What gravity is. These are more varied. According to Einstein, gravity is curved spacetime. Another theory says gravity is caused by particles that, just to spite Newton’s Laws of Motion, cause any objects they hit to move toward where the graviton came from. According to string theorists, string theory can also explain gravity, but we have to take their word for it because string theory is intentionally confusing. According to Aristotle, objects like falling. Either all or all but one of the current theories of gravity are wrong; that doesn’t mean gravity is a myth, it means we need a better theory.

The theory of evolution is actually worse off than gravity as far as semantics go. Laws are mathematical. They use and produce specific numbers that tell us exactly what is going to happen. Evolution is never going to have a law because it is not possible to make an equation describing something that is, by definition, completely unpredictable. The closest evolution will ever get to a formula is “The more likely you are to die before you can reproduce, the less likely you are to reproduce.”

Also: Atomic theory. You can say “it’s just a theory” as many times as you like, but you can’t deny that nukes work.
    Germ theory. I dare you.
Cell theory. This being an essential part of germ theory, you are hereby double-dared.

While I’m at it, proof or lack thereof has never determined what is and isn’t a religion. Worship does. People used to worship the Sun. I think we can all agree that that was a religion despite fairly strong evidence indicating the Sun’s existence. Luminiferous aether was an old scientific theory that was not only completely wrong, it was completely pointless. Despite my hatred of it and everyone associated with it, I recognize that it was never a religion. I will also never call it “just a theory”.

Now, please, either present some legitimate points or stop pretending you know any. Just quit arguing semantics. Same goes for you people I agree with. Gravity and atoms may be theories, but so were aether and spontaneous generation.

Sorry, all you anti-evolutionists, but evolution is about as hard science as it can get. I mean, there are nine separate converging lines of evidence that point to the validity of the theory-molecular genetics, fossil evidence, species distribution, embryology, etc etc.

At this point, all the anti-science weirdos are just dragging their feet and desperately grasping for any reason to hold onto their skewed worldviews. Even the Pope acknowledged the validity of evolution, for God’s sake! (Can I get a rimshot for that one?)

Here are a few websites so you haters can get informed:

    http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/

Oh, and to be really specific, here’s a case study:

    Good times.

Also unbelievers of evolution state “we did not evolve from apes” or something of the like, when evolution is also the adaptation of a species to its environment.

Take a white rabbit for an example: If this white rabbit lives in a forest, it is easier to spot for predators, and is therefore more likely to get killed and eaten. While A brown rabbit in the forest blends in better, giving it a higher survival rate which leads it to be more likely to reproduce and pass on the qualities that it has to its offspring.

Now if we were to reverse the habitat and put the brown rabbit in the snow, then it is the one who is more likely to get eaten, and the white rabbit survives better, thus passing on its genetic qualities to the next generation.

Or birds that Darwin studied in the Galapagos. When the food supply the birds ate became larger sized (bigger seeds, ect) the next generation typically had slightly bigger beaks to deal with the food, and when the seeds were smaller then the birds had slightly smaller beaks to pick up the smaller seeds better.

Evolution takes time, and can be misconceived as an overnight transformation of a species by a certain group of people, which it is not.

I like how high and mighty you act in an attempt to make others feel foolish for believing in something the same way you believe in something. Taking all the evidence and coming to a conclusion with no hard proof either way. Way to go and be tolerant.

Because there’s a difference between “You’re wrong because my theory is older and wider-believed” and “actually, this is what probably happened based on our observation of nature.”

    This comic is hilarious.

And I don’t think you should be dispelling evolution at all. Pedro is right.
There is clear evidence in the genetics of every living thing. It might not make sense to you because you haven’t learned about it, but there is a clearly a pathway of evolution that has occurred over time. All you have to do is look at the difference between your parents and yourself. You are no where near identical to them and your genome is the same. Think about how different you are from them and now multiply that by our population and the amount of time Humans have been walking around. Sometimes those differences make you better and they stick in large amounts and other times they become detrimental and a group of individuals expressing those genes and traits die off.
Evolution is a massive amount of mutations and changes and adaption mashed into one resulting in the world as we know it.
The idea might be too large for you to understand but it definitely does not make it a religion.

WTF guys, surely no one is actually saying species dont change over time, we know bacteria evolve resistance to antibiotics, we breed animals, plants by manually evolving them, we have the fossil record, we have the thousands of active research labs researching medicine and bacteria, we have literally millions of recorded case studies confirming genetics and evolutionary theory. Ask a few friends and you will find people with double joints, the ability to roll their tounge, its so clearly true i dont know how this is even up for debate.

I have no problem if you believe that a god was the creator, but not that evolution doesnt happen or isnt possible, evolution is such a pillar of biology that denying it puts you in the same boat as germ theory and aids denialists.

And if you do actually believe that evolution isnt a thing, then please, offer an alternate theory to all of genetics and we can talk.
