But didn’t Atlas hold up the heavens though, not the Earth?
Holding up the heavens is physically impossible due to stuff with negative space and such (assuming the heavens are uniformly dense, he wouldn’t actually need to hold up the heavens or earth at all – they would both float because it would all be perfectly symmetrical). Because of that, since it was known that the earth was round, Atlas is most often depicted holding up the earth – that being slightly more chiselable and all.
There are however also Atlas paintings and statues where Atlas is holding up a sphere with projected on it all the stars of the night sky.
Tip for the future: don’t draw body hair, especially not armpit hair. The Greeks never depicted because they realized it’s just nasty, and no one wants to see it.
I thought atlas held up the sky?
