Don't worry, this one isn't based on the real life of a certain master's-degree holding webcartoonist you might know - as *if* there were any table waiting jobs in this economy

I believe a more likely reason concerns latent heat of freezing and all that jazz, but this explaination is cooler (pun totally intended)

I lol’ed. Science wise, it’s the same reason why you can superheat water in a microwave, right?

Well in that case I’m going to assume that the guy in this comic is an artist’s interpritation of me and the waiter is a young Martin the Soundman.

Erm, wouldn’t the drinks be impure though?

Perhaps the colligative properties present due to the sugars in the solution would actually be a more practical?

They could be ice-cold flavoured water.

But the reason the waiter was saying is the correct one, there are even some vids on Youtube of bottles of -0C water being tapped lightly, causing them to freeze. They’re really cool.

Never seen that effect with the word balloon… The customer got “wrapped-up” by the conversation…

    Really cool!

How much of the customer’s time did he waste writing down thermodynamics equations? The nerve of some people!

If you have ever measured the temperature of melting ice, you would have noticed that the temperature keeps rising till it reaches 0 degree C, when the temperature remains stable and the ice starts melting. Only when all the ice has melted does the temperature rise again. It needs some heat energy to go from ice at 0 degree C to water at 0 degree C. This energy is called the latent heat of fusion. See, much more simple, and without involving nucleation points :D
