I first thought, he stepped into a pile of giraffe-poo and was reminding the one in the background not to shit where they drink… Not as funny or clever, just a first impression.

But I didn’t know the expression so I guess that’s why I didn’t get it at first… my boyfriend explained.
My first impression was that the elephant had trodden in a really big piece of brown bubble gum.

I thought at first the joke was that the elephant will never forget stepping in that pile of poo, which isn’t that funny. Now I see that the joke is that the elephant has forgotten that elephants never *forget*.
